You can use a crossover cable and private ip's. Make sure they are in the same network. You will have to manually move everything which is no biggie. If you want to use the windows file transfer wizard you need a serial link i believe.
For the cables networks just use 192.168.1.1 and .2, mask of 255.255.255.0, don't need to input a gate way. Turn on file sharing in your firewall and under properties of your wired adapter. Share a folder on each and start copying. Each should show up in my network places.

Answer

Take any one laptop first,
Go to control panel from start menu, double click on network connections,->Right click on Local Area connection->Properties->Select Internet Protocol(Tcp/IP) in the General tab's This connection uses the following items and click on properties. Here you select Use the following Ip address and provide the IP address, subnet mask, default gateway. And click ok.

For first Laptop
IP address: 192.168.1.1
Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
Gateway : 192.168.1.1

Take another laptop now and provide
IP address: 192.168.1.2
Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
Gateway : 192.168.1.1
as you did for the first one.

And after that disable the firewall in both the laptops.

Now you will be able to access the system each other using IP or by name.
